Second day of the conference of the European Alliance of Academies on dealing with controversial histories of cultural institutions and controversial monuments in public space.
Spread over two days, artists, writers, curators and policy makers will answer these and many other questions. The aim is to think about the shared future of Europe.
The third conference of the European Alliance of Academies will take place on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 June. The European Alliance is committed to the freedom of the arts in Europe.
The war in Ukraine is first and foremost a deep tragedy for the citizens of this European country. Not only are countless people killed and injured, buildings are irreversibly damaged, the war also affects the current and future memory of Europe. Statues and cultural objects are wrapped to protect them from destruction. Other monuments are removed because they refer to a past that people no longer want to see as shared. Also, if the war ever ends, new forms of cultural memory will be established.
In this closing lecture, the speaker will discuss the current situation and the future of memory in Europe:
• Vasyl Cherepanyn, Director, Visual Culture Research Center, Kyiv
Maria Hlavajova, General and Artistic Director of BAK
