Paul Verhoeven

The most famous Dutch film director by far is undoubtedly Paul Verhoeven (born 1938). He first gained fame in the Netherlands for his TV series Floris, for the film Turks Fruit (still the most successful Dutch film ever), Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange), De vierde man (The Fourth Man) and more recently for Zwartboek (Black Book). 

In the USA, he made such blockbusters as Robocop (1987), Total Recall and Basic Instinct. 

Verhoeven's fascination with Jesus should not go unmentioned, with his book Jezus van Nazaret - een realistisch portret being published in 2008. Verhoeven is certainly also the Netherlands’ most lauded director: he received a Gouden Kalf on several occasions, many foreign awards and Oscar nominations, a Gouden Leeuw and a BAFTA Award.
