Wende Snijders

  • Vocalist

If there is a common thread running through the work of Wende Snijders (born 1978), a long-successful singer, performer, repertoire and showmaker in the theatre and pop world, it is her intense curiosity and ability to constantly reinvent herself.

Wende graduated from the Academie voor Kleinkunst in 2002 with a burning desire to tour with her own theatre concerts featuring a chanson repertoire from the 1950s and 1960s. She received an impressive number of awards for her work, including two Edisons (in the world music and jazz categories) and, in 2008, the Annie MG Schmidt prijs for her composition De Wereld Beweegt. After seven years of performing this repertoire, she turned to writing her own repertoire in the pop/electronic music genre, suitable to play in clubs and pop venues. Her latest project Last Resistance combines Wende’s electronic music with orchestral music.

Wende always probes the boundaries to see how they can be stretched even further. She does this in both her own work and in projects in which she collaborates with others. She creates shows that combine all of the elements of theatre to tell a story and seeks out the tensions between theatre, pop music, electronic music and classical music and where they meet and interconnect. In this work, she explores the balance between entertainment and experimentation.

Wende combines her great talent and love of craft with a seemingly inexhaustible wellspring of experimentation.

Her first leading role in the film Zurich instantly earned her a nomination for a Gouden Kalf.

'I want to sing, dance, make, play forever in wonder, right across all genres.' - Wende
