Paula van der Oest

  • Film maker
  • Director

From the start of her career, film director and screenwriter Paula van der Oest (born 1965) showed a keen eye for interpersonal relationships and a talent for depicting them subtly and with humour in her films and screenplays.

Van der Oest, trained at the Dutch Film Academy, has an impressive filmography.

She made her first feature film, De nieuwe moeder, in 1996. Her third feature, the 2001 comedy Zus & zo with an ensemble cast, was nominated for an Oscar, and her latest film, based on the true story of a nurse wrongly convicted of murder, is on the longlist for best foreign film for the upcoming Oscars. Van der Oest received two Gouden Kalveren awards, for Coma in the television drama category and for The Domino Effect for best direction. Van der Oest was guest of honour at the 2013 Dutch Film Festival, a major token of recognition in her profession. It was recently announced that she will direct next year's film adaptation of A.F.Th. van der Heijden’s Tonio.
