Koert van Mensvoort

  • Visual artist
  • Researcher

As both an artist and scientist, Koert van Mensvoort (born 1974) works with new technologies. He focuses on the concept of Next Nature, arguing that technology is so ubiquitous, complex and autonomous that we have come to experience it as nature, or ‘next nature’.

Van Mensvoort studied computer science at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he also received his PhD and still works part time. He also studied design at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.

He is always seeking the most appropriate and surprising forms for his designs, for example NANO Supermarket (a travelling grocery bus offering a speculative collection of nanotech products), The In Vitro Meat Cookbook, The Rise and Fall of Rayfish Footwear (a fictitious company that crafted personalised sneakers from genetically modified stingray leather), and Datafountain (a fountain that displays real-time exchange rates, making online information explicit).

Van Mensvoort communicates his ideas as a speaker, in media appearances, as an event organiser and on numerous websites.
