Hans van Manen

  • Choreographer

Considered by many to be the Netherlands’ greatest choreographer, Hans van Manen (born 1932) is one of global leaders in classical modern dance.

His oeuvre comprises 150 ballets and spans a period of sixty years. Van Manen's ballets are sober, austere but laced with humour and musicality. In terms of style, he is a constructivist. Van Manen's work has been performed by 80 companies around the world; most recently, the Mariinsky Ballet performed a full programme of Van Manen’s work.

Van Manen works alternately with NDT and the Dutch National Ballet. He has received many awards, including the Benois de la Danse, the Deutsche Tanzpreis, the Deutsche Musikpreis and the Erasmusprijs (2000). In 2007, he was appointed Commandeur in de Order of the Netherlands Lion for his 'merits of a very exceptional nature'.
