Iris van Herpen

  • Fashion designer

Fashion designer Iris van Herpen (1984) has brought about radical changes in her field. Her work, which can be described as sculptural and futuristic, combines craftsmanship with innovation.

She was the first to come up with 3D-printed clothes but she also focuses extensively on traditional handicrafts.

After studying fashion at ArtEZ in Arnhem, she started out working for Alexander McQueen and Claudy Jongstra. In 2007, she started her own label, releasing a collection for women twice a year. Her approach in developing her collections is highly interdisciplinary and she collaborates with architects, musicians, photographers and filmmakers, and choreographers.

Van Herpen's collections are based on scientific themes. For MICRO (2012), she used images from an electron microscope, diving into the world of micro-organisms and the subject of Radiation Invasion (2009) was the presence of electromagnetic radiation in our daily lives. Since 2011, Van Herpen has been a member of the prestigious Chambre Syndical de la Haute Couture. Her designs are favoured by such major stars as Björk, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Tilda Swinton and can be found in museum collections.
