Saxophonist Raaf Hekkema (born 1968) co-founded the Calefax Reed Quintet in 1985, which performs all over the world and collaborates with artists from a wide variety of disciplines.

In his arrangements for Calefax, Hekkema uses elements from different style periods and often ventures into creating what are in effect new pieces of music. The question then is who is actually the composer – or, taking it a step further, whether music is still possible today that has sprung from the brain of just one person.

Hekkema's work has been described as virtuosic, innovative and daring. As a soloist, he received the German Echo Klassik Award in 2007 as instrumentalist of the year. Hekkema also teaches at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. In 2005, Calefax won the VSCD Classical Music Award.
