The broad oeuvre of novelist A.F.Th. van der Heijden (born 1951) has received every conceivable literary prize, including the Constantijn Huygensprijs (2011) and the PC Hooftprijs (2013).

In his novels and stories, ‘anything can become literature’. Whether reporting on squatter riots, the history of crime, football hooligans or his personal life, Van der Heijden always succeeds in recreating human existence as a work of art with his keen eye for the moral and the tragic.

Two major novella cycles form the hub of his work: De tandeloze tijd and Homo duplex. For his book Tonio. Een requiemroman, about the sudden death of his only son, he received both the Libris Literatuurprijs and the NS Publieksprijs in 2012, with more than 200,000 copies also being sold.
