Grunberg often leaves his writer's desk for new experiences. He has been ‘embedded’ in a psychiatric clinic, with soldiers in Afghanistan, with chambermaids, with ‘normal Dutch families’ and with the staff of a Swiss railway catering service.
He recently joined neuroscientists in studying the neurobiology of creating and experiencing art. Grunberg has received numerous Dutch and international awards for his books, starting with his debut Blauwe maandagen. He has been a guest writer at several European universities.
