After studying Fiscal Economics, Alida Dors transitioned to the breakdance scene as a dancer. Dors danced in the underground and commercial circuits and joined several companies. In 2004, she co-founded the dance school Solid Ground Movement (https://www.solidgroundmovement.dance/). She then developed her choreographic skills and started her own dance company, BackBone, in 2011. In the same year, she graduated with a degree in sociology (from the University of Amsterdam).
Dors’s work reveals her strong commitment to social issues in which she explores themes of race and bicultural identity. Her choreographies can be seen as interdisciplinary dance chronicles that intertwine hip-hop and modern dance, characterised by their social and political engagement. Her dance production Or Die Trying (2019) was nominated for the Zwaan, the Netherlands’ most important dance award.
Dors became artistic director of er Rotterdam in 2020.
