Adriaan van Dis

Writer Adriaan van Dis (born 1946) made his debut in 1983 with the novella Nathan Siden and has produced an impressive oeuvre since then. Among his works are the travel novels Het beloofde land and In Afrika and the award-winning novels Indische duinen and Ik kom terug. 

The latter was also adapted for the stage and featured actress Olga Zuiderhoek. A collection of Van Dis’s books, stories and essays on South Africa, titled De Zuid-Afrika boeken, was published in 2017. 

Much of his work has been translated. He is the recipient of the Gouden Uil award (for Indische Duinen in 1985), the Libris Literatuurprijs (for Ik kom terug in 2015) and the Constantijn Huygensprijs for his entire oeuvre. 

Besides his literary work, he is also active as a presenter of several TV programmes and has his own podcast. In 2024, he published a collection of essays, De kolonie mept terug, the fruit of many years of participating in the Society of Arts' working group, which reads and discusses Dutch and international literature and operates under the name ‘Slow-growing trees have deep roots.
