Michiel Borstlap

  • Composer
  • Musician

Michiel Borstlap (1966) is regarded as an icon of Dutch jazz. Known as a virtuoso pianist, he has also earned his spurs as a composer.

After studying at the conservatory in Hilversum, he performed with his own Michiel Borstlap Sextet and with countless other, often famous, musicians in the Netherlands and abroad. His focus in recent years has increasingly been on solo performances. Borstlap has composed film music – he won a Gouden Kalf award for his score for the film Tiramisu – and the music for Avicenna, the first opera to be written and produced by Arabs, at the request of the Emir of Qatar.

Borstlap has worked on some surprising collaborative projects, for instance with the vocalist Gino Vannelli, the string section of the Metropole Orchestra, Ludovico Einaudi, and the Scapino Ballet company. Since 1992, he has released some 20 albums.
