Gijs Bakker

  • Designer

Silversmith and designer Gijs Bakker (born 1942) plays a major role in design, and in Dutch Design in particular.

He is regarded by young Dutch and foreign designers as innovative trailblazer in jewellery and product design. He is also a founder/co-founder and organiser of various design platforms, including Droog Design (1993), Chi Ha Paura (1996) and HAN Gallery in Taiwan, formerly Yii (where he has been creative director since 2009).

Bakker has also had an impact on hundreds of designers as a teacher and an inspiration. He spent 25 years at the internationally renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, most recently as the head of the master's programme.

In his designs, Bakker takes a holistic approach in which heart, mind and matter come together. His designs have a clear signature and many have now become modern icons.

Bakker's work has been shown in dozens of exhibitions, including at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Hermitage in Moscow.
