The guidelines and application requirements for the residency and the application process are on Application and nomination 2025-2026

Part of the application is a project description written by the candidate, including the proposed research, title, activities and intended results.

Proposals will be assessed for:

• A clearly formulated research question in line with the objectives of the programme.
• The added value of a residency at NIAS.
• Feasibility of the project.
• A clearly specified work plan, research method and expected result.
• A good command of the English language, as this is the working language of the fellowship.

• Dutch artists who work in the Netherlands or abroad, or
• Non-Dutch artists who live and work in the Netherlands

Members of the Society of Arts can apply themselves; other candidates must be nominated by a member of Society of Arts, KNAW or Young Academy. 

Applying for the Artist-in-Residence programme is possible from 15 January to 17 March 2025, 12:00 noon.

For the 2025-2026 residency, the artist will stay at NIAS in Amsterdam from February 2026 to June 2026.

No. The residency period is fixed so that all fellows are present at the same time during their research. 

All documents (CV, motivation letter, research proposal, recommendation letter) must be written in English. 

• A monthly stipend of € 3200, for the duration of five months 
• Temporary housing close to the NIAS or an allowance to cover travel between the fellow’s place of residence in the Netherlands and the NIAS (public transport, 2nd class travel or a fixed mileage allowance)
• Temporary offices, IT and library facilities and lunches at the NIAS There are no artist’s studios available
• A travel allowance (economy class) for return travel between the artist’s home abroad and the Netherlands
• Fellows are responsible for paying tax to the Tax and Customs Administration of the Netherlands (Belastingdienst) or to the tax authorities of the country in which they are liable to pay tax

No, this residency offers a place for theoretical study and includes facilities such as an office and library. 

A good command of the English language is needed, as this is the main language of the fellowship.

No, there will be no correspondence on the motivation of the selection committee's choice.

The Society of Arts does not provide contact information of members of the Society of Arts/ KNAW/ The Young Academy. It is the candidate's own responsibility to get in touch with a member for fellowship nomination. 

The aim of this fellowship is to conduct an in-depth theoretical study of an artistic project, and then develop it into a final product such as, for example, an essay, film or concept.

During the residency, all fellows at NIAS share the progress of their research among themselves one by one during weekly seminars.

At the end of the residency at NIAS, the result of the research must be made accessible to the public. This can be done through a presentation, seminar, publication or other activity at the Society of Arts.
