Membership of the Society of Arts is for life. In 2024, 86 artists are members from across the arts and new members are elected each year based on nominations.
Art is important for society and the individual, to understand something of ourselves and the culture we produce. The Society of Arts aims to lay a foundation for a firm position of the arts in society, independent of changing political views.

The Society of Arts is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). For meetings, publications or projects, members of the KNAW and the Society of Arts regularly collaborate.
The Young Academy and the Society of Arts jointly organise Mingler, the Arts-Science Track and collaborate for the KxWxS letter advisory to the government.
Together with the Society of Arts, the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) facilitates the Artist-in-Residence fellowship, in which an artist conducts research at NIAS for a project of their own.
The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR), together with the Society of Arts, facilitates the Artist-in-Residence position, in which an artist conducts research in Rome for a period of 3 months.

Founded in 2014, the Society of Arts is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. There is much affinity between the work of a scientific researcher and that of an artist.
